The only way is down…

Posted by Nicola Morgan | 5 December 2011

… or so we thought, climbing Everest is an up and down experience for the duration of the whole trek so when it dawns on you that the journey back is full of the same up and downs you know it’s still going to be bloody hard work getting back.  The saving grace is that the air will get thicker with oxygen and you will be able to breathe again.

It takes three days to get back to Lukla which is where we get the aeroplane back to Kathmandu, and its lovely to be in the lush surroundings of the Himalayas again, watching life carry on, since leaving Lukla for the beginning of the trek we haven’t seen a car, bike or vehicle of any kind, its all down to yak and porter power.

So, three days of more bloody hard work and the weather was really miserable low cloud and cold a complete contrast from the first few days when we had brilliant sunshine and thank god we did.

The final days trek I was so, so, so fed up, everyone else seemed happy to be getting back to civilisation and there was me hating the idea, I loved everything about this journey, the people I was with, the Nepalese people and our team, the country and the mountains the peace and quiet and the natural beauty and the fact that the world I live in was left far behind and I was in a place where I had everything I needed and didn’t find myself wanting anything more.

If anyone had asked my why I was so quiet I think I would have burst into tears.

So finally we get back and because people have been stranded due to the bad weather, the tea house we where going to stay in is still full, fortunately Raj our ‘Sherpa leader’ finds us somewhere else, the down side was that it was still being built, ah well beggars can't be choosers.
